Small-batch natural sock yarn, made in our North Island mill
From locally sourced fibre to the finished skein, this yarn is made by hand at The Little Mill. Bouncy Southdown Suffolk wool meets the lustre and strength of mohair and the softness and warmth of possum. Three singles are plied with a tighter twist for a characterful, worsted-weight yarn. This lovely yarn would make great mittens and hats too the Southdown Suffolk resists felting compared to other sheep breeds
- Fibre: 70% Southdown Suffolk wool, 20% Angora mohair, 10% possum; no nylon
- Skein: 50g, approximately 85m (based on 170m per 100g)
- Weight: Worsted / aran
- Suggested needles: 3.75–4mm
- For a medium pair of socks: Allow approximately 120g, so purchase 3 × 50g skeins. Actual usage depends on size and pattern.
How to wear it
This natural, nylon-free yarn does not have the durability of synthetic-reinforced sock yarn. It is best suited to indoor socks or socks worn with slides, rather than heavy everyday shoe wear.
Small-batch milling gives each skein a handspun-like character, with some variation in thickness. Meterage is approximate.
Care
Non-superwash. Gently wash with a suitable fibre wash; do not wring. Towel dry, then lay flat in the shade.
